The dirt track race organised at Lalitha Mahal Palace grounds in Mysore was marred by stone-throwing in which a police constable was injured.
Though the event went off smoothly in the morning with several bike riders from Mysore, Bangalore, Hassan, Kodagu, Chickmagalur and Mandya vying with one another for top honours, trouble began a little after 12 p.m. when a section of the spectators threw stones at the policemen for preventing them from straying on to the track.
Shekar, a constable attached to the Nazarbad police station, sustained head injuries. The police resorted to caning the unruly crowd, but had to face severe stone-throwing, forcing them to run for cover. You can click for source information here.
With the situation threatening to go out of hand, the police requisitioned additional forces from the District Armed Reserve and Karnataka State Reserve Police. “The event was disrupted for about one hour. We had to bring in additional forces to bring the situation under control. However, later the crowd melted away and the event resumed,” Inspector of Nazarbad police station Jayaram told The Hindu.
Hundreds of racing enthusiasts had thronged the grounds in the morning to watch the bike riders negotiate the curves and bends along the 1.4 km-long dirt track.
A number of modified motorcycles powered by shrill engines, kicked up plumes of smoke as the riders skilfully rode along the dirt
